In Luke 23:34 (ESV), we read "And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." The NASB follows the Greek better and says "Jesus was saying...."
The idea here in the Greek verb for "said" is that Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them" over and over and over and over again! Death on a cross had a lot to do with suffocation, but Jesus was using every last breath he had to cry out for the forgiveness of his killers!
